Muskrat Falls Project: Soldiers Pond
Power generated at the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric generating facility will be delivered to homes and businesses by the 1,100km High Voltage direct current (HVdc) transmission line from Muskrat Falls to Soldiers Pond. As part of the project, new infrastructure is being constructed and installed at Soldiers Pond, approximately 35 km west of St. John’s. The Soldiers Pond site will include:
(1) A converter station that will convert direct current (dc) power from the transmission line into alternating current (ac) power, suitable for use by homes and businesses.
(2) A switchyard that will connect the system with the existing electricity grid.
(3) A synchronous condenser facility that will maintain stability of the power system.
